Ever since my early backpacking days I’ve made something of a specialty out of saving money on my travels, but sometimes it’s worth treating yourself! I’ve been to London a few times – it’s only an hour and a half by air – and eventually I knew I needed to stay at the world famous Ritz.
Nothing makes you feel more like high society than staying at the Ritz. The hotel, which was built over a century ago, was the original playground for the rich and famous. Now it’s available to anyone who can afford a room, which typically starts at several hundred dollars a night. I went during the week on a Tuesday when you can expect lower prices as this is a popular weekend tourist destination.
The first thing you notice about the hotel is the stunning elegance. Any room in this hotel could be a set piece for a Victorian drama on the BBC. The lobby was fashioned with marble columns and decorate live palms and flowers. Check-in is of course made very simple by the hotel clerks.
My room, one of their cheaper non-suites, was still exquisite. Gold trim was simply everywhere. The bed was covered in gold and silk. I am glad that mattress technology has advanced since the early 20th century. Even though the furniture in the room had an old style it definitely had modern comfort. It was like sleeping on a cloud.
Don’t forget to go down to the dining area for afternoon tea time. They have the most delicious macaroons you will ever find, and the scones aren’t anything to scoff at either. Gluten free is also available! The restaurant is also excellent. Many people will be wearing suits and dresses but I do not believe they are strictly required.
The Ritz is definitely one of the best places you can go to if you want to pretend you are one of the London elite living it up in a life of luxury after the great war. While the hotel is modern, most of what you would expect in the 21st century is tucked away or hidden so your eyes are always drawn to the classical exuberant style only the Ritz knows how to do so well.
