When I was younger I used to forget things all the time, especially when I was going on vacation. Traveling as much as I do forced me to get better organized but I’m always meeting other people on hotel trips who are worrying about what they left behind. That’s why I made this list to make packing easier.
Clothes
Exactly what you need to wear will depend on the reason for your trip, but you should always make sure you have fresh underwear, sleepwear and pantyhose or socks. Even if you’re going on a business trip, take something comfortable to wear when you’re relaxing in your room. Always take at least one outfit you can wear for an evening engagement, because you never know what might come up. Choose clothes that won’t crease too badly when folded, and don’t forget swimwear if there’s a pool.
Toiletries
Check in advance what the hotel provides and don’t feel shy about demanding promised items if they’re not there. You’ll need your own toothbrush and toothpaste (mini travel tubes are ideal), deodorant, hair styling products, brush or comb, moisturizer and make-up if you wear it. Don’t forget to pack any medication that you need.
Work supplies
Many hotels now provide basic business materials but, again, you should check what’s available before you go. If you’re working on your trip, or even just keeping an eye out for networking opportunities, remember to take business cards and any reports you need. Depending on where you go, you may also need adaptors for electronic items.
Entertainment
Taking a laptop provides enough entertainment for many people, but you may also want books. I like to take puzzle magazines to fill in bits of quiet time.
Food
In smaller hotels, especially in rural settings, you may find it hard to get snacks in the evenings. Foods like dried fruit, crackers or potato chips are lightweight, easy to store and good for tiding you over. If you must take candy, store it inside a plastic bag so that if it melts it doesn’t get all over your belongings.
